Syntax is often overlooked and misunderstood, but is KEY to reading and writing proficiency!

This series presents research on syntax and explains its critical role in comprehending complex text, reading fluency, and writing coherent sentences. Armed with this understanding, educators will learn how to teach their students the functions of sentence parts—words, phrases, and clauses—in order to show them how to unpack the meaning of sentences they encounter in text and write a variety of sentences to convey ideas.

Over the course of four sessions, participants will learn instructional strategies and activities to build reading comprehension and written expression skills. Using a book of their choosing, they will be guided to select text excerpts in order to plan some of the activities. During the final session, participants will create a lesson plan using their book and a formatted lesson plan template that will provide them with the opportunity to apply what they learned about teaching syntax over the previous three days.

This is a BYOB (Book) party – please ensure you come to the workshop with a book ready. For educators teaching kindergarten – grade 4, please bring a picture book with plenty of complex language that you would use for a read aloud. For educators teaching grades 5 and up, please bring a book that students would read.

Sessions will be recorded.

Registering for one session will automatically register you for the series.
