Learning Through Literacy

Grade 6 – Learning through Literacy

Learning Through Literacy for Grade 6 supports students in strengthening comprehension and content learning through intentional reading, discussion, and writing across subject areas. As curriculum expectations increase in complexity, students engage with texts that require sustained attention, precise vocabulary, and increasingly sophisticated language structures.

Literacy instruction is integrated within content learning to support analysis, synthesis, and communication, enabling students to manage complex ideas and apply learning across the Ontario curriculum.

While fluency and structured writing are presented together in grade 6, educators are encouraged to use these resources in ways that best support classroom instruction. Components may be used individually or intentionally woven together to meet instructional goals and student needs.

Structured Writing in Grade 6

Structured writing in Grade 6 focuses on using writing to clarify thinking, integrate information, and communicate understanding with precision. Through a guided writing cycle, students examine mentor texts to analyze how authors develop explanations, connect ideas across paragraphs, and use language purposefully to convey meaning.

Students apply these structures in their own writing through supported planning, drafting, and revising, with exemplars, explicit vocabulary instruction, and guided practice. Writing serves as a tool for consolidating learning, supporting deeper comprehension and increasingly independent application across subject areas.

Fluency in Perspective – Grade 6

Fluency in Perspective helps to support the development of accurate, efficient, and expressive reading. Each fluency passage is designed for use with the Quick Fluency Routine and is practiced repeatedly across the week to build automaticity and confidence. As students move into more complex texts across the curriculum, fluency plays a critical role in freeing cognitive resources for comprehension and meaning-making. Ongoing fluency practice supports smoother reading, improved understanding, and greater readiness to engage with grade-level texts across subject areas.
