Embedded picture mnemonics
Embedded picture mnemonics make early phonics instruction feel playful and memorable. By weaving a meaningful image into the shape of the letter, such as a zipper forming z or a road forming r, children more easily connect the picture to the letter’s sound. Research shows that this playful approach supports faster, stronger learning of letter–sound correspondences. ONlit offers these mnemonics in English and French as print files with instructional cards, desk visuals, and home-practice materials, and as animated videos that pair each mnemonic with the letter and its formation pattern using a clear, explicit routine. French Immersion educators will also find a full set of print and video resources in French to support playful, evidence-based phonics instruction.
