Description

This PaTTAN webinar discusses writing instruction for grades 4 to 12. It unpacks and discusses the Writing Rope, a conceptual model for the components of effective writing instruction: critical thinking, syntax, text structures, writing craft, and transcription. Many practical suggestions for explicit teaching of the different writing components are shared.

The Writing Rope provides educators with a framework for what is needed in order to have effective writers. This webinar allows Ontario educators to provide explicit writing instruction so students can “generate and develop ideas about various topics, such as topics related to diversity, equity, and inclusion and to other subject areas, using a variety of strategies, and drawing on various resources, including their own lived experiences” (D1) and “identify and construct various sentence types and forms, including compound-complex sentences, and correct sentence fragments and run on sentences” (B3.1 Gr 5).

  1. Really glad you discussed the ‘not-so-simple’ view of writing. This is a favourite of mine as it includes executive functioning.
Writing to read is powerful – including taking notes for reading. If they are having trouble with writing, they will almost always have trouble with reading.
The 5 major patterns of writing are also essential. Great graphic organizers.
Graham and Harris are the best!
