Description

This IDA Ontario webinar focuses on how to implement a Structured Literacy Block in Grade One by breaking down the learning day into three different sections. The first block is about Oral language, knowledge, Language Comprehension, Vocabulary and Fluency. The second block is building Word Recognition skills through systematic and explicit instruction. The third block is on how to plan small group instruction. Within this webinar, Martha presents educators with many great professional development resources and ready made resources that can be implemented within the classroom.

This webinar shows educators how they can organize their day to incorporate instruction in line with the Ontario Language Curriculum. Martha instructs educators on how to integrate instruction across all of the strands of the curriculum to best meet all students' needs.

  1. Such a great question! Teaching in a FI school myself, there is a lot of pressure on our English teachers to squeeze in all of the literacy components during a short 60 minute block. At my FI school, our English to Immersion teachers use the UFLI program to help with the decoding instruction (which can easily be integrated into Martha’s lesson plan) and the Great Minds Language Comprehension books for the Language comprehension piece, building students background knowledge, vocabulary, reading fluency and everything that is essential for reading comprehension. Every minute of the 60 minute block is accounted for and the instruction is intentional. I hope this helps 🙂

  2. I absolutely love this webinar with Martha Kovak! I appreciate how Martha has included oral language instruction in her daily lesson plan as it is an important, yet frequently overlooked, component of the reading and writing process. Not only is this lesson ideal for students in English language programs but it is ideal for FSL students, too! The webinar is jam-packed with helpful information that is conveyed in a clear, easy-to-implement, structured manner.
