Description

In this activity, students practice recognizing, sounding out, blending and reading words with short vowels.

This activity supports the teaching and learning of consonant and short vowel grapheme-phoneme correspondence.

  1. The « Mark and Read » strategy is a great scaffold for students who are still learning to blend sounds together to read words. I appreciate how explicit the move from « mark and read » to « think and say » is.

  2. The ‘Break the Code’ activity using short vowels is fantastic in supporting learning. It builds the student’s understanding of the connection between phonemes and graphemes. It helps young learners to develop their understanding of, ‘Think It, Hear It, Say It, Write It’, as they learn that if they can say a sound, they can also write the sound. This is an important step for children in their understanding of the connections between letters, sounds and words.
