In this International Dyslexia Association Perspectives article, authors Tanya S. Wright and Susan B. Neuman explore the topic of content-rich vocabulary instruction. The article explains why vocabulary instruction is essential and what it is. It provides five meaningful ways to increase vocabulary instruction in the classroom, including how to create a vocabulary-rich environment, ways to review and practice, and the importance of progress monitoring their growth.

This article supports the explicit teaching of vocabulary and the importance of creating vocabulary-rich classrooms. While geared toward the primary teacher, Junior and Intermediate teachers will be able to apply this knowledge to their older learners.

  1. Great ideas for infusing vocabulary both implicitly and explicitly- and allowing students to experience this multiple times. Vocabulary instruction is not a one and done. Beck and McKeown have excellent evidence-based ideas for integrating Tiered vocabulary work into the classroom.
