Word Connections: Intervention to Support Word-Level Reading Skills for Students in the Intermediate Grades

As students move into the upper elementary grades, they face increasing amounts of text with more complex words—yet many lack a systematic approach for reading these words. These demands continue to grow as students transition to middle and high school while. Students with reading disabilities, even those who have attained foundational reading skills, often experience persistent difficulty with multisyllabic words.

Word Connections is a supplemental, targeted intervention designed to address this gap by building advanced word reading skills through explicit instruction and practice. In this session, Dr. Toste will highlight the theory of change underlying the program—describing the processes involved in complex word reading and the instructional routines that support ongoing reading development. She will demonstrate the instructional routines used for each of the seven components of Word Connections program and discuss considerations for effective implementation.
