I agree with Deborah about using the nonsense words for instruction, however this is a solid strategy that can be used with a progression of increasingly complex words. It was great how fast he internalized that strategy.
Very explicit and systematic steps for supporting students to read bigger words. You can see how this scaffolds from earlier phonemic and phonics knowledge around vowel sounds, vowel patterns and more. I am not a fan of teaching with nonsense syllables, but aside from that this is a great progression of skills. Many many students will benefit from this including students in any of the upper grades.
A good, simple strategy for teaching multisyllabic words.
