We must build background knowledge along with development of phonemic awareness and vocabulary. Excellent strategies beginning with understanding the Big Idea, and also using psychological principles of learning including distributed practice. As students come into classes with different backgrounds, experiences, language opportunities, it truly behooves educators to make this work a TOP priority!
