Description

This is a rubric to support educators in analysing an informational text, and planning for instruction. It is organized around the four categories of qualitative complexity: purpose/meaning, language, structure, and knowledge. Within each category, educators will first analyze the complexity level of each category, drawing from the Literary Text Qualitative Rubric, to determine what makes this text more or less complex. Then, they will also identify relevant opportunities and cautions for culturally relevant pedagogy.

  1. This rubric is a thoughtful way to analyze informational text with an equity lens. It could be useful in teacher prep and planning when selecting texts, but portions may also be useful to use with students to reflect on as they are reading selected texts to help them reflect on the messaging and bias in those texts.

  2. I would like to see this resource paired with additional resources that support literacy through an equity and/or social justice lens as well. Pairings with resources from the Library Learning Commons would be beneficial too!
