D3. Publishing, Presenting, and Reflecting
Students will select suitable and effective media, techniques, and tools to publish and present final texts, and critically analyze how well the texts address various topics.
During Grade 1, the focus was on:
- Produce final texts, using simple techniques, to achieve the intended effect
- Presenting the texts they have created using appropriate strategies, including by reading aloud with expression
- Identifying a strategy they found helpful when presenting texts
New for Grade 2:
- As foundational language skills develop, this should be reflected in writing.
- Identifying a few strategies they found helpful when presenting texts.

A Note About Publishing and Presenting
Every piece of writing does not need to be taken through to the publishing stage. Although there is value in taking a few pieces through the full writing process throughout the year, it is important to think about where most of the learning occurs.
Planning, drafting, revising, and editing are powerful steps that require students to think deeply and critically about their writing. Students can plan a piece of writing (D1 strand) and the work can stop there. Or, they can take a piece of writing through to the editing and proofreading stage (D2 strand), but then stop there (Hochman & Wexlar, 2017).
Consider creating a writing portfolio for each of your students. In this portfolio, students can house different pieces of writing that stopped after either the planning or editing stage. These pieces can be held until there is a collection of writing that can be pulled from and the students can choose which of their pieces they want to take through to a final, polished piece that they can publish and present to an audience (D3 strand).
This approach of controlled choice helps to build autonomy for students and helps to increase their engagement and excitement about writing.
