Grade 2 Guide

B2. Language Foundations for Reading and Writing

In Grade 2, there is a provincial requirement to provide at least 30 minutes of daily uninterrupted systematic and explicit instruction in Strand B2 skills. (PPM 168)

Appendix A, Language Foundations Continuum for Reading and Writing, Grades 1-4, outlines the specific expectations for B2.

Data-Driven Instruction

The skills in the continuum build upon one another year after year. Gaps in earlier skills can cause major challenges down the road, which is why it is important to use screening and assessment data to guide instruction in this area. These data are helpful not only when considering the strengths and needs of an individual student but also for planning instruction for the whole class.

Working collaboratively with your grade and/or division-level colleagues, consider analyzing student data to identify groups of students with similar needs across classes. Implementing a “walk to read” model will allow you to create more homogenous small groups and target skills more efficiently.

NOTE: In some cases, it may be necessary to re-teach some skills in the Kindergarten/Grade 1 or Grade 1 column to the whole class before moving on to the Grade 2 expectations. If this is the case, it is important to work through these skills at an accelerated pace to ensure you can also meet the Grade 2 expectations by the end of the year. When students have skill gaps, they need to learn at a faster rate than expected to allow the gap to close.
