Teaching Meaning-Focused Grammar

January 29 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm EST

The ONlit partner, Western University, is hosting Teaching meaning-focused grammar improves Grade 1 sentence complexity and written expression.  The presenters are Perry Klein, professor with the Faculty of Education at Western, and Dilrukshi Troup and Carolyn Mussio, of the London Catholic District School Board (LCDSB).

This talk will present their research on the Syntax Project-Foundations unit. The Syntax Project largely aligns with the new 2023 Ontario Language curriculum expectations concerning sentence writing and grammar. Last year, the effects of the Syntax Project-Foundation unit with 109 Grade 1 students in 10 classrooms were tested, using a wait list control design. The program had significant effects on most measures of sentence complexity and correctness, as well as quality and length of written composition. The program was effective for students across a range of skill levels, and its social validity was rated highly by participating teachers.

Wednesday, January 29, 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm EDT.

This is a hybrid event. Registration is through Western University.
