Description
Elkonin boxes build phonemic awareness skills by segmenting words into individual sounds, or phonemes. To use Elkonin boxes, a child listens to a word and moves a token into a box for each sound or phoneme. In some cases different colored tokens may be used for consonants and vowels or just for each phoneme in the word.

This article supports the teaching and learning of segmenting, an important phonemic awareness skill.
Such a great way to promote sound segmentation visually.
Elkonin boxes are great for supporting phonemic awareness, and also for phonics development. What I also appreciate is that I they are supported by a wide range of research as well – including Clay, in addition to the scientific research.
Using Elkonin Boxes have been a game changer for my students! We use them in whole group instruction, small groups and centres.
Elkonin boxes are great for helping students attend to each phoneme in a word and the associated grapheme.
