Grade 6 – Unit 7

The Seven Grandfather Teachings: Lessons for Living Well

The Seven Grandfather Teachings are important life teachings that have been shared for generations. This unit can be used in consultation with your school’s Indigenous Education and Equity teams to support respectful, accurate, and inclusive practices. In addition to this, students will learn about compound-complex sentences to refine their sentence comprehension and writing skills. This unit integrates Drama and Language (Strand A3) by applying literacy skills across subjects and making connections to First Nations, Métis, and Inuit perspectives and ways of knowing.

Fluency in Perspective

Stories, Songs, and Symbols

The fluency passage in Unit 7 explores the many ways human beings have shared knowledge and preserved traditions across generations. As students participate in repeated reading activities, they strengthen oral reading fluency while building vocabulary related to communication, culture, and oral traditions. The passage supports knowledge building by examining how stories, symbols, images, and music have been used in different societies throughout history.
