Beyond the Stars
The Beyond the Stars Releasing Writers-inspired unit features a series of journal entries on how different objects in space emit or reflect light, while connecting writing to the Ontario Grade 6 Science curriculum. In the accompanying syntax lesson (found in the Instructional Slide Deck for structured writing), students practise adverbial clauses and syntactical flexibility. Science and syntax are brought together through a Star Wars-themed mentor text, because even Jedi need strong sentences.
Fluency in Perspective
Understanding the Solar System
The fluency passage in Unit 5 supports students in developing a deeper understanding of the solar system and the characteristics of planets and other celestial bodies. Through repeated oral reading, students strengthen fluency while building scientific vocabulary and comprehension related to space and astronomy. The passage encourages curiosity about scientific discovery and the ways humans continue to study the universe.
