In this podcast from Amplify, Susan Lambert engages with Dr. Brittney Bills, an educator who moved from school psychology to curriculum coordination at Grand Island Public Schools. Dr. Bills delves into the concept of MTSS, highlighting its focus on prevention over intervention, exploring the link between universal screening data and MTSS, and providing insights into evidence-based classroom strategies. Drawing from her district’s context, she also addresses burnout prevention, optimizing data usage, and the journey of ongoing improvement.

I love this episode so much that I included it in our “Listen and Learn Podcast Club” in 2022! One of my favourite quotes from this episode was “we need to beef-up our Tier 1 instruction.” I couldn’t agree more, Dr. Bills! We cannot intervene our way out of a Tier 1 program and the only way we can reach MORE students is with strong Tier 1, core reading instruction. If you haven’t listened to this episode yet, I recommend you listen to it today!!!
It will be so important helping educators to read the data. Also to understand the difference between MTSS and differentiated instruction, and to be so intentional and efficient with time. Even small groups for 5 minute interventions should be planned. As Dr. Barbara Bills shares, small group instruction is no longer a time of day, but a strategy.
