Morphology in Content
Last updated 2025/08/22
Description
Morphology is the study of the structure of words, focusing on the smallest units of meaning—morphemes—rather than just syllables or sounds. Teaching morphology to students is a powerful tool for enhancing their reading, writing, and comprehension. As students gain awareness and understanding of morphemes, they can decode and understand unfamiliar words more effectively, expanding their vocabulary and background knowledge.
Morphology in Content consists of 18 slide decks and student pages (linked from the buttons below) designed to support systematic and explicit instruction of morphology in the context of the content curricula. Each 20-minute lesson includes:
- a predictable, consistent routine
- active participation and opportunities to respond are embedded throughout the routine
- animations to guide educators and provide additional information
- explicit vocabulary lesson
- multisyllable word reading instruction
- morpheme instruction
- making meaning and connections between words, supporting the enhancement of knowledge networks
- follow-up sentence writing that can be extended into a longer writing task based on an educator’s professional judgment

These resources are fantastic, Una, and the slides for each term are beautifully done! Thanks so much for sharing!
I really like the way this is set up but I teach grades 7 and 8. Can you recommend some resources for me to use to create something similar?
Hi Michelle – you might find find Marcia Henry’s book, Unlocking Literacy, to be a good place to start. The appendices are wonderful and have many words and morphemes organized into content areas. This morpheme matrix resource might also help – https://atlasabe.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/Morpheme_Matrices-rev072120.pdf
Is this resource available in relation to Grade 5 subject content?
Hi Sue – we only have grade 6 content for this resource. For grade 5, we’re focusing on content-connected writing instructional materials this year. More details to come!
Thank you, that was a great resource.
This is a very comprehensive set of resources!
