The “Healthy Food Web” lesson offers educators a valuable resource to integrate into their teaching plans. The lesson primarily focuses on fostering students’ media literacy skills while exploring the role of snack foods in a balanced diet. Through a guided tour of child-targeted websites and interactive activities, students analyze and classify advertising, considering how advertised foods align with the Canada Food Guide’s categories. They engage with the game “Co-Co’s AdverSmarts” to grasp online marketing techniques and create their mock website promoting healthy eating. The lesson achieves various learning outcomes, including students developing an awareness of online marketing’s objectives and impact, identifying advertising elements, and recognizing implied messages. Additionally, they gain insights into nutritional aspects and food categories for maintaining a healthy lifestyle. By connecting media literacy with nutrition education, the “Healthy Food Web” lesson provides educators with a comprehensive tool to enhance students’ critical thinking and nutritional knowledge.
